Which Australian city is best for international students?
In the QS Best Student Cities 2027 ranking, Melbourne placed 4th in the world and Sydney equal 5th with Munich, behind Seoul, Tokyo and London, according to the on 22 July 2026. The ranking does not measure universities alone: it combines university performance with student mix, employer activity, affordability and the views of students themselves.
Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Canberra are also ranked, but their positions move every year; check the current figure on the QS city rankings page before you decide.
KD itself described Melbourne and Sydney as "vibrant" cities with advanced universities, striking nature and diverse cultures in an August 2023 post on X. That still holds, but it does not make them the only choice.
Where are the highest-ranked universities?
The university matters more than the city. In the QS World University Rankings 2027, nine Australian universities entered the global top 100, spread across all six cities, according to ABC News on 18 June 2026:

Which city is the cheapest to study in?
The visa living-cost figure is the same everywhere
The Department of Home Affairs requires a Student visa (subclass 500) applicant to show funds for living costs of at least AUD 29,710 for 12 months, plus AUD 10,394 for an accompanying partner, according to the Student visa page at Home Affairs as at 1 July 2026. That figure is identical for every city; the real difference is rent.
Other items do not change with the city either: the visa application charge is AUD 2,500 for applications lodged from 1 July 2026 according to Study Australia on 3 July 2026, Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is a visa condition in every state, and tuition is set by the university, not the city. So when you compare two cities, compare rent, transport and the tuition of the same programme, and ignore what is uniform across Australia. Rent is the real difference
According to an ABC News report based on Domain data for the December 2025 quarter (published 15 January 2026), median weekly unit rents were:

Public transport differs by state
- Queensland (Brisbane): every trip on the Translink network is a flat 50 cents regardless of distance, according to as at September 2026.
- Western Australia (Perth): the Tertiary SmartRider is available to any full-time student at a WA university or TAFE, according to Transperth.
- New South Wales (Sydney), Victoria (Melbourne), South Australia (Adelaide) and the ACT (Canberra): concession rules for international students vary and change; check the state transport authority, for example.

Brisbane is the warmest, Sydney the wettest, and Canberra the coldest in winter with nights at freezing. Adelaide and Perth have dry summers that feel closest to what a Saudi student knows.
Where are the Saudi community and the Cultural Mission?
The Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission in Australia (SACM, الملحقية الثقافية السعودية في أستراليا) is based in Canberra (contact SACM). Under its umbrella there are Saudi student clubs in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, as well as Newcastle, Armidale, Wollongong and Tasmania, according to the student clubs page on the SACM website updated 17 June 2025. Whichever of the six cities you choose, you will find a Saudi club that runs national celebrations and welcomes new arrivals.
Who suits each city?
- Sydney: for students who want Australia’s two highest-ranked universities (UNSW and the University of Sydney) and its largest job market, can afford higher rent, and want KD’s own Sydney office nearby.
- Melbourne: for those who want the top-ranked student city with lower rent than Sydney, and can handle a colder, longer winter.
- Brisbane: for those who prefer warmth, a slower pace and 50-cent fares, with UQ in the global top 40.
- Perth: for a quieter city with a dry climate close to the Gulf’s, and mining and engineering strengths at UWA.
- Adelaide: for the least crowded option, with a newly merged university in the top 100.
- Canberra: for ANU, politics and public-policy programs, proximity to SACM, and tolerance for cold.
