The Group of Eight (Go8) is an alliance of eight Australian research-intensive universities, incorporated as a company in 1999 and based in Canberra. All eight members sit inside the world’s top 100 in the QS rankings, and together they receive nearly 70% of Australia’s Category 1 competitive research grant funding (Go8). That is why Saudi scholarship students keep asking about them.
What is the Go8 and who are the members?
The Go8 is neither a ranking nor an accreditation body. It is a grouping of major research universities that represents its members in higher education and research policy and builds international research partnerships (Go8). The members are Adelaide University, The Australian National University (ANU), The University of Melbourne, Monash University, UNSW Sydney, The University of Queensland, The University of Sydney and The University of Western Australia.
The numbers the group uses to describe itself: roughly $10 billion spent on research each year, "99 per cent of Go8 research is world class or above", about 500,000 students — more than a quarter of Australia’s higher education enrolment — approximately 135,000 graduates a year, and half of all doctorates awarded in the country (Go8).
Where do Go8 universities sit in QS 2027?
In the QS World University Rankings 2027, UNSW became Australia’s top-ranked university for the first time, and nine Australian universities made the global top 100 (ABC News, 18 June 2026). The group said six of its members were in the global top 40 and all eight in the top 80 (Go8).
| University | City | QS 2027 rank |
|---|---|---|
| UNSW Sydney | Sydney | 19 |
| The University of Melbourne | Melbourne | 22 |
| The University of Sydney | Sydney | 28 |
| The Australian National University (ANU) | Canberra | 29 |
| Monash University | Melbourne | 31 |
| The University of Queensland | Brisbane | 40 |
| The University of Western Australia | Perth | 77 |
| Adelaide University | Adelaide | 79 |
Source: ABC News, 18 June 2026. For comparison, the University of Technology Sydney — not a Go8 member — ranked 87th in the same edition, so a high rank is not exclusive to the group.
ANU reported that it climbed three places to 29th globally and fourth nationally, with an overall score of 87.6 (ANU, 18 June 2026).
Why does the Go8 matter to a sponsored Saudi student?
Because most scholarship programs are built on lists ordered by global rankings. When a track requires admission to "the top 30 institutions" or "the top 200 universities", research-intensive universities usually dominate those lists. For research degrees and postgraduate study, the volume of research funding and the number of available supervisors matter more, and the figures above measure exactly that.
But keep one distinction in mind: a university’s overall rank is one thing, your subject’s rank is another. Many non-Go8 universities outrank members in specific fields, which is why we have compared subject rankings rather than institutional rankings alone since our earliest guidance (KD International, 15 May 2018).
Is Go8 membership a requirement for a Saudi scholarship?
No. The requirement under the King Salman Scholarship Program (the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Scholarship Program) is the approved institution list for your track, not membership of any alliance.
- Ar-Ruaad track (مسار الرواد): requires an offer "from the top 30 institutions on the program’s list", final and unconditional (Saudi Ministry of Education). Okaz reported that applications opened for 30 universities in eight countries — the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland, Canada and France — closing 15 November 2026 (Okaz).
- Emdad track (مسار إمداد): sponsors study at "the top 200 universities and institutes worldwide in specific fields of high labour-market need", with 223 universities listed across 15 countries and eight fields (Saudi Ministry of Education).
The Ministry’s tracks page lists four tracks: Ar-Ruaad, Waed, Emdad, and Research and Development (Saudi Ministry of Education). The Tamayoz (excellence) track appears on the e-service page and in earlier news coverage, so check which tracks are open when you apply. The practical rule: open your track’s list and search for the university and the field together, because approval can be field-specific.
What differs in practice: admission and fees
Admission
Large research universities receive more applications per place in popular programs, so entry thresholds tend to be higher and deadlines stricter. One published example: ANU charges an application fee of AUD 150 per application, closes Semester 1, 2027 applications on 15 December 2026 and Semester 2, 2027 on 15 May 2027 (ANU). Do not assume those dates apply elsewhere; every university runs its own calendar.
Fees
There is no single "Go8 price". Tuition differs between universities and between programs within the same university, and is reviewed annually. The binding figure is the one on your program page and in your offer letter. Government costs are published: the student visa application charge rose from AUD 2,000 to AUD 2,500 from 1 July 2026 (Study Australia), and the visa allows up to 48 hours of work per fortnight while your course is in session (Study Australia).
How to choose between Go8 universities: practical steps
- Start from your track’s approved list on the Ministry of Education website, not from the general ranking.
- Compare subject rankings rather than institutional rankings — they are closer to what you will actually study.
- Read the program page for entry requirements: the grade threshold, the English requirement, and any prerequisite subjects.
- Put every university’s deadline in one calendar and apply weeks, not days, ahead.
- Add living costs in the university’s city using the government cost of living calculator (Study Australia).
- Build the visa file early: Confirmation of Enrolment, OSHC, and evidence of financial capacity.
Our process, from first message to departure day, is set out in our process steps.
The takeaway
The Go8 label is a useful shorthand for strong research universities, but it is neither a scholarship requirement nor an admission guarantee. The right decision starts with your track’s list, then your subject’s rank, then the program’s requirements and budget. Frequently asked questions
Adelaide University, The Australian National University, The University of Melbourne, Monash University, UNSW Sydney, The University of Queensland, The University of Sydney and The University of Western Australia. The group describes itself as Australia’s leading research-intensive universities, all inside the QS world top 100.
In the QS World University Rankings 2027, released in June 2026, UNSW ranked 19th globally and took first place in Australia for the first time, ahead of Melbourne at 22 and Sydney at 28. The best one for you still depends on your field and entry requirements, not the overall rank alone.
No. The requirement is the approved institution list for your track on the Ministry of Education website. Ar-Ruaad requires the top 30 institutions on the program list with a final unconditional offer, while Emdad covers the top 200 with a list of 223 universities across 15 countries.
They receive more applications per place in popular programs, so thresholds tend to be higher and deadlines tighter. Read the entry requirements on the program page itself — those govern the decision, not the institution’s reputation.
There is no single group-wide price; fees vary by university and program and are reviewed each year. Rely on the figure published on your program page and in your offer letter, then add living costs using the government cost of living calculator.
Ar-Ruaad sponsors study at the top 30 institutions on the program list across all fields for bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and opened for 30 universities in eight countries until 15 November 2026. Emdad sponsors study at the top 200 universities in specific high-demand fields, with 223 universities listed in 15 countries.
Usually not. Overall rankings measure the institution as a whole, while subject rankings track what you will actually study and the supervision and research available in it. Start from the subject ranking, then confirm the university sits on your track’s list.
