Master’s Admission in Australia: GPA, English and Work Experience

Admission to a master’s degree in Australia rests on three things: a recognised bachelor’s degree with an average that often comes to 60% or 65% on the university’s scale, an English score around IELTS 6.5, and, for some programs, a related background or work experience. There are two quite different types, master’s by coursework and master’s by research, each with its own conditions.

What is the difference between a master’s by coursework and by research?

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) places the master’s degree at level 9 and recognises three forms: the Masters Degree (Research), the Masters Degree (Coursework) and the Masters Degree (Extended) for professions such as medicine and law, according to the AQF. The typical volume of learning for coursework and research master’s is one to two years, and for the extended master’s three to four years, per the AQF volume of learning explanation.

The simple rule: if your goal is a job or a change of field, choose coursework; if your goal is a PhD or an academic career, choose research.

What GPA do you need for a master’s in Australia?

There is no single GPA. Each university sets a minimum for each program and expresses it as a percentage or a weighted average mark (WAM). Documented examples:

How is a Saudi GPA converted?

Australian universities convert your GPA from a 5-point or 4-point scale to their own scale using internal equivalence tables, and not all of them publish those tables. So do not rely on an approximate conversion; the accurate route is to submit your official transcript and let the admissions office calculate it. Documents not in English need translation by an accredited translator such as NAATI or by your university’s registrar, according to the University of Sydney.

What English score is required for a master’s?

The common requirement for coursework master’s is IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0, which the University of Sydney sets for postgraduate coursework as at September 2026, with alternatives such as TOEFL iBT and PTE accepted under its concordance table. Some programs go higher: the Melbourne Business School MBA asks for IELTS 7.0 with no band below 6.5. For the visa, the minimum for degree study is IELTS 6.0 for applications lodged from 23 March 2024, according to, but the university’s requirement is the one that governs, because it is higher.

Do Australian universities require work experience for a master’s?

For most coursework programs, no. The main exceptions are executive business programs, the MBA and some professional specialisations. The full-time MBA at Melbourne Business School requires a bachelor’s degree, at least two years of documented professional experience, a GMAT or GRE score (waived for holders of an Australian or New Zealand bachelor’s who are not applying for scholarships) and two professional referees, as at September 2026. Read the page of the program you want: if experience is listed as a requirement, count it in years from graduation; if it is not listed, it is not required.

A note for scholarship applicants: the Ministry of Education requires that the program is not an executive program and is not issued by continuing education or vocational colleges.

Can you study a master’s in a different field from your bachelor’s?

Yes. This is the conversion master’s, and many universities accept a bachelor’s from any discipline and make up the gap with foundation units that lengthen the program:

• Monash accepts a bachelor’s that need not be in IT for its Master of Information Technology at a 60% average for entry level 1 (two years), while a graduate of a cognate discipline enters at level 2 (one and a half years).
• UNSW admits graduates of non-cognate disciplines to its Master of Information Technology through a Graduate Certificate pathway packaged with the master’s, at a 65% average; the master’s runs two years, with indicative international fees of AUD 63,000 for the first year and AUD 130,500 for the whole degree as at September 2026.

The rule: conversion is common in IT, business, education, public health and similar fields, and rare in professions whose licence is built on the same bachelor’s degree. What is the difference between a conditional and an unconditional offer?

The university issues either an unconditional offer or a conditional offer whose conditions you must meet first, according to the University of Sydney; the most common conditions are the English score or the final graduation certificate. You accept the offer by its deadline and pay first-semester fees, and you then receive the electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) for your student visa application.

This distinction matters enormously for Saudi scholarship applicants: the tracks of the King Salman Scholarship Program (برنامج خادم الحرمين الشريفين للابتعاث) require a final, unconditional offer issued by the university’s admissions office, as in the Pioneers track conditions, and the Pioneers and Emdad tracks target bachelor’s and master’s degrees. How to apply for a master’s in Australia, step by step

1. Choose between coursework and research based on your goal, shortlist three programs and read each one’s conditions: average, background, English, experience.
2. For a research master’s, contact a potential supervisor and write a research proposal; the University of Sydney’s Arts MPhil asks for a proposal of not less than 1,000 words.
3. Prepare documents: degree certificate and transcript with certified translations, passport, English result, and references and a CV if requested.
4. Apply directly through the program page or through an agent authorised by the university, and pay the application processing fee if one applies.
5. When a conditional offer arrives, meet its conditions, then accept the offer and pay first-semester fees to receive the eCoE.
6. Apply for the student visa (subclass 500); the fee is from AUD 2,500 since 1 July 2026 per Study Australia, and applications are assessed against the Genuine Student requirement in force for applications lodged from 23 March 2024 per the Department of Home Affairs.
