Do you need a supervisor before applying?
In Australia, usually yes. The UK is more flexible. The University of Sussex advises you to contact an academic to confirm their supervision capacity, but it can also match you with a supervisor while assessing your application, according to the (as at 14 September 2026). How do you write to a supervisor?

Is a research master’s required, and what are the alternatives?
The usual entry to a PhD in Australia is a bachelor’s degree with honours that includes a research component, or a master’s degree, according to Study Australia (as at 14 September 2026). The University of Queensland sets the main route as a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or equivalent research master’s, or honours class IIA or higher, and then lists alternatives with the Dean’s approval: a coursework master’s that included relevant research experience with a GPA of at least 5.65 on a 7-point scale, a postgraduate degree of at least one year full-time with a GPA of at least 5 on 7 combined with research experience, or a bachelor’s degree plus at least 2 years of relevant research experience including publications, with the degree completed within the last 10 years, according to the University of Queensland (as at 14 September 2026).
The common alternative route is the research master’s itself: one to two years with a thesis of 20,000 to 40,000 words according to Study Australia, open to holders of a bachelor’s degree with first- or second-class honours according to the University of Sydney. What are pre-doctorate preparation programs?
Some UK universities accept graduates of a pre-doctorate program delivered by a partner pathway college: the student enters with a general research area, without a supervisor or a finished proposal, and leaves with a complete proposal and research skills. Cranfield University, for example, states that graduates of this program are "guaranteed an interview" with the university where research areas match, after which they may be offered a place, according to (as at 14 September 2026). The guarantee is for the interview, not for admission; check the program’s duration and English requirement with the college and the university.

What does the Saudi scholarship require for a PhD?
In the King Salman Scholarship Program (برنامج خادم الحرمين الشريفين للابتعاث), the PhD sits in the Research and Development track (مسار البحث والتطوير) alone; the Al-Ruwwad track targets bachelor’s and master’s degrees according to its degrees page, while the Research and Development track targets the doctorate according to its degrees page (as at 14 September 2026). Its conditions: a PhD offer from one of the top 200 institutions on the track’s list, final and unconditional, issued by the university’s admissions office, with a language condition allowed only in non-English-speaking countries, according to the Ministry of Education (as at 14 September 2026). The program does not cover a language year in English-speaking countries, and the PhD duration follows the institution’s system but may not exceed 3 years, according to the Ministry of Education FAQ (as at 14 September 2026). A conditional offer from a preparation program is therefore not enough on its own for the scholarship; the goal is the final offer.
Steps to apply for a PhD
- Confirm your qualification: a research master’s or honours with a research component, or one of the alternatives the university publishes.
- Write a one-page research idea: the question, why it matters, and how you will answer it.
- Find three to five potential supervisors at universities on your track’s list and send the three-paragraph email.
